Orange, Equitix and Irish subsea cable developer MDM have formed a joint venture, PISCES Cable System Limited, with financial support from the European Union, to develop a 3,125-km subsea fibre-optic cable connecting Galway in Ireland with Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez in France, Sopelana in Spain and Carcavelos in Portugal, with deployment expected in 2028.

The PISCES Subsea Cable System is a major telecommunications infrastructure project designed to establish a direct, high-capacity digital connection between Ireland and continental Europe. Telecommunications operator Orange, infrastructure investor Equitix and Irish subsea cable developer MDM have formed a joint venture to develop and deliver the project. The initiative aims to strengthen Europe's digital connectivity, improve network resilience and support the growing demand for data transmission driven by cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI) and data center expansion.

The proposed cable system will extend approximately 3,125 km and connect four key locations: Galway in Ireland, Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez in France, Sopelana in Spain and Carcavelos in Portugal. With 16 fibre pairs, the system is designed to provide substantial transmission capacity and open-access connectivity. Orange will develop a new cable landing station in Sopelana, Spain, to support the system. Once operational, the cable is expected to improve connectivity between Ireland's cloud and data center hubs and mainland European networks, creating additional opportunities for telecommunications operators, cloud service providers and other digital infrastructure businesses.

The project brings together complementary expertise in telecommunications, infrastructure investment and subsea cable development. Orange contributes its international telecommunications expertise, Equitix provides infrastructure investment through its dedicated Irish greenfield infrastructure fund, Equitix Infra Ireland, and MDM contributes its experience in developing and delivering subsea cable systems. The joint venture, PISCES Cable System Limited, is led by Carine Romanetti as chief executive officer. The project also benefits from significant financial support through the European Union's Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), which supports strategic digital infrastructure across Europe.
