The Minister of Transportation and Communications, along with the executive director of the Private Investment Promotion Agency (PROINVERSIÓN), inspected the progress in the construction of the Bujama Interchange, located in the district of Mala, province of Cañete, Peru.
This key infrastructure project is designed to enhance traffic efficiency and road safety along the Pan-American Highway, serving the thousands of truck drivers who pass through the area each day. Currently 70% complete, the long-anticipated works will benefit over 240,000 residents in the Mala region and are on track for completion between October and November. Beyond reducing accidents, the interchange will strengthen regional links, boost commerce, and improve overall quality of life through better connectivity. The project is expected to cut the number of annual accidents in the area from 30 to around eight, addressing a location where nearly 200 fatalities have occurred since 2010. Its design features a third lane, concrete dividers, grade-separated intersections, and controlled access points to minimize the risk of head-on collisions and pedestrian accidents along one of Peru’s busiest highways. Backed by an investment of PEN 39 million (US$11 million), the works will also improve traffic flow between the Pucusana Bridge and Ica, reducing travel times and easing congestion for the thousands of daily users of this vital national route.
The project consists of raising the Panamericana Sur through the construction of two reinforced concrete bridges, each 20.5 meters long with an average clearance of 5.8 meters, enabling vehicles to pass safely beneath. This design will keep the road linking the Mala Valley to the Bujama Resort at ground level. In addition, a pedestrian pathway and dedicated bike lanes will be built, separating cyclists from motorized traffic to enhance accessibility and safety. The initiative forms part of a broader package of 21 projects aimed at alleviating congestion and promoting safer, more efficient travel.
