PROINVERSIÓN has declared the expansion project of Lima Metro Line 1 technically and economically viable in Lima, in coordination with the Ministry of Transportation and Communication.

This milestone enables the formal launch of procedures to amend the concession contract and move forward with implementing one of the capital’s most significant infrastructure projects, designed to strengthen the capacity and efficiency of mass transit. The process will be carried out in coordination with the concessionaire, the Urban Transport Authority (ATU), the Ministry of Transport and Communications, and the Ministry of Economy and Finance. Under the plan, Lima Metro Line 1 will undergo full modernization, integrate with Line 2, and be prepared to deliver higher-quality service to passengers.

The project entails a total estimated investment of PEN 14,104.05 million (US$4.14 million). Among its main components is the implementation of the advanced Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC)system, an internationally standardized technology that will reduce peak-hour intervals from 3 to 1.5 minutes and increase operational capacity. The fleet will also be expanded to 92 trains, and the new 28 de Julio interconnection station will be built, integrating Line 1 with Line 2 of the Lima Metro and creating a more integrated network. With this upgrade, Lima Metro Line 1 consolidates its role as the main pillar of mass transportation in Lima, directly linking eleven districts and serving more than 3.4 million residents. The project is designed to accommodate forecast demand through 2042 and is expected to cut travel times for new users by up to 2.08 hours per trip, boosting productivity and enhancing overall quality of life.
