The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI), the Regional Government of Lambayeque (GORE Lambayeque), and the Private Investment Promotion Agency (ProInversión) signed a cooperation agreement to advance the Olmos Irrigation Project in the Lambayeque region, Peru.
ProInversión will provide technical support to GORE Lambayeque to ensure the continuity and enhancement of the Olmos project's infrastructure, particularly the water transfer system critical for irrigating over 30,000 hectares of agricultural land. Plans include optimizing the operation of the Limón Dam, which currently operates at half its intended height. Enhancements aim to increase its storage capacity from 30 million to 110 million cubic meters, ensuring a sustainable water supply for the region's agricultural needs.
The Olmos Project, inaugurated in 2014, was designed to transfer water from the Huancabamba River through a 20-kilometer trans-Andean tunnel to irrigate arid lands in Lambayeque. Despite its potential, the project has faced challenges, including sediment accumulation in the Limón Dam and maintenance issues.
