The Government of São Paulo is carrying out an international mission to Europe as part of the technical qualification actions for the Santos-Guarujá Tunnel project.
The program features technical visits to two prominent European sites that employ immersed tunnel technology—the same approach intended for the link between Santos and Guarujá. The São Paulo State Government delegation will visit the operations center of the Dutch company Imontevc, known for its expertise in handling and submerging large underwater structures. They will also take part in a technical tour of the Scheldetunnel in Antwerp, Belgium, and meet with representatives from Lantis, the local regulatory body overseeing the Oosterweel project, one of the largest infrastructure developments in Europe.
The Santos-Guarujá Tunnel will be the first of its kind in Brazil, 1.5 km long—870 meters of which are under the canal bed—with three lanes in each direction, a dedicated light rail transit lane, and a pedestrian and cyclist gallery. The total planned investment is R$6 billion, with public and private funds, under a 30-year concession. The project is the result of a partnership between the São Paulo State Government and the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Ports and Airports, with support from Artesp, the National Waterway Transportation Agency (Antaq), and the Port Authority of Santos (APS). The initiative is eligible under the State Investment Partnership Program (PPI-SP) and is part of the Federal Government's New PAC.
