Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo), a Canadian institutional investment manager, has joined an investor consortium led by Equitix, alongside GCM Grosvenor, to acquire a 50% interest in Viridor Group from KKR, a global investment firm. KKR will retain the remaining 50% stake in the company. Announced in October 2026, the transaction represents AIMCo’s first investment in the energy-from-waste sector and expands its exposure to essential infrastructure and environmental services in the United Kingdom.

Viridor is a leading UK energy-from-waste operator that provides waste-management and energy-recovery services to communities across the country. The company operates 12 energy-from-waste facilities, with two additional facilities under construction. These facilities process residual waste—waste that remains after recycling and other recovery processes—and convert its energy content into electricity. Through these operations, Viridor contributes to waste management, resource recovery and the generation of energy from waste that would otherwise require disposal.

The investor consortium was attracted to Viridor’s strong market position, predictable long-term contracted cash flows and inflation-linked revenue arrangements. Long-term contracts can provide greater visibility over future income, while inflation-linked payments may help protect revenues against rising costs. Viridor’s diversified operating footprint across the UK also reduces reliance on any single facility or location. Together, these characteristics make the business attractive to institutional investors seeking stable, long-term infrastructure returns.

Another important factor behind the investment is Viridor’s potential for future growth. The two facilities under construction could expand its waste-processing capacity and strengthen its market position once operational. The company also operates in sectors associated with the circular economy and decarbonisation, where waste recovery and improved resource efficiency are important long-term themes. However, the extent to which these opportunities translate into higher returns will depend on project delivery, operating performance, regulatory requirements and future investment costs.

For AIMCo, the transaction provides an opportunity to diversify its infrastructure portfolio while investing in a business that delivers an essential public service. For Equitix and GCM Grosvenor, participation in the consortium provides exposure to an established environmental-infrastructure platform with potential for further development. KKR’s continued 50% ownership means it will remain an important shareholder, while the incoming investor group will hold a 50% co-control position. The parties intend to work with Viridor’s management team to support the company’s continued growth and development.
