The Chilean Ministry of Public Works (MOP) announced progress on the Bi-Túnel project, a key infrastructure initiative aimed at improving connectivity between Ruta 5 and Ruta 78 in Greater Santiago, Chile.
The project entails the construction of two underground, mining-style tunnels, each extending 2.5 km, to enable bidirectional traffic between Santiago and San Antonio. By adopting a subterranean approach, the project prevents urban division and preserves surface continuity, allowing the protection of key landmarks such as Centenario Park and the Víctor Jara Floodable Park. In addition, the initiative also includes the development of a multipurpose park above the tunnels, converting the area into a green, recreational space that will enhance the urban environment and benefit surrounding communities.
The twin-tunnel project is a strategic and efficient solution that will optimize the connection between Route 5 and Route 78, resolving one of the most critical traffic bottlenecks in Greater Santiago. Originally, its design considered viaduct and open-cut solutions. However, local communities and authorities expressed their opposition to these alternatives due to their urban, social, and environmental impact. In response to these concerns, the MOP initiated a participatory process that concluded with the need to adopt an underground solution, using two underground tunnels.
