The Ministerio de Obras Públicas (Chile) (MOP) has announced that the new terminal at the Aeropuerto de Balmaceda in the Región de Aysén is now more than 60 % complete.

The project includes the installation of 5 boarding bridges, the expansion of the terminal from its current 2,400 m2 to 12,391 m2, and the addition of 99 new parking spaces (currently 173). The number of parking spaces for commercial aircraft will also be doubled from 3 to 6, and 13 new parking spaces for general aviation will be provided. The existing terminal will house the cargo area and the DGAC's aeronautical facilities, and the commercial aircraft apron will be expanded eastward with a new parking area for commercial aircraft. This will involve adapting and rehabilitating the existing commercial apron for general aviation, along with a new taxiway, a helipad, potable water and fire suppression systems, perimeter fencing, signage, and landscaping. This project aims to guarantee service and comfort conditions for passengers and airlines, reduce waiting times, and improve the country's image for tourists entering through the southern region.

The project integrates a wide range of new technologies designed to support the development goals of Coyhaique and the wider Aysén region. It is expected to drive a sharp rise in visitor numbers, boost tourism, and strengthen the region’s capacity to export goods and services. The new Balmaceda Airport is scheduled to begin operating in the first half of 2027, positioning itself as the main air entry point to southern Chile and as part of the “Southern Airport Network,” which also includes the third concession of Punta Arenas’ President Carlos Ibáñez del Campo Airport. Altogether, the network represents an investment of CLP 116 billion (US$123.5 million).

With an investment of CLP 35 billion (US$37.2 million), the Ministry of Public Works' Airports Directorate will carry out work that includes the installation of an instrument landing system to enable landings in low visibility and reduce flight cancellations due to weather conditions. Through these works, which will also involve moving the runway 300 meters to the east, the main airport facility in the Aysén region is intended to overcome various gaps in relation to the regulations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
