The Gauteng Provincial Government has appointed Sihamba Sonke Mobility as the new Gautrain operator for 15 years, replacing the previous concession arrangement with Bombela, to operate, maintain, upgrade and modernise the Gautrain network in Gauteng, South Africa.
The agreement has been signed and has reached financial close. Sihamba Sonke Mobility, a South African-owned company with a 70% local ownership stake, will operate, maintain, upgrade and modernise the Gautrain network under a 15-year contract running until 2041. The previous 19½-year concession agreement with Bombela Concession Company (BCC) officially ended on Friday, 27 March 2026. In the interim, Bombela Operating Company (BOC) will continue managing Gautrain under a contractual holdover arrangement. The Gauteng Provincial Government has completed the final negotiations with the preferred bidder for the new Gautrain concession agreement, which will operate under the name Sihamba Sonke Mobility. To extend the network’s coverage, the government has also gazetted plans for additional routes and stations. A major part of the proposed expansion is a 17.4km rail link to Lanseria Airport. According to the government, the route would include elevated viaducts and a station situated north of the airport’s parking area. The initial phase of the expansion is expected to introduce stations in Soweto, Mamelodi, Springs, Atteridgeville, Fourways and parts of the West Rand. The proposed new Gautrain stations are Jabulani Station, Roodepoort Station, Lanseria Station, Cradle Station, Smart City Station, Samrand Station, Fourways Station, Sunninghill Station, and Olievenhoutbosch Station.
The Gauteng Provincial Government has finalised the route planning for the proposed Soweto Extension and Cosmo City Junction as part of the Gautrain expansion project. A major component of the plan is a new 19.9km underground rail section connecting Little Falls to Soweto. The proposed Cosmo City Junction will serve as a key interchange within the expanded network, improving connections between Soweto, Centurion and Sandton. It will also link the new routes to the existing Gautrain network via Randburg Station. The Little Falls–Jabulani route will pass through a proposed new station in Roodepoort. Meanwhile, the Cosmo City–Samrand route is planned to serve additional stations in Fourways, Sunninghill and Olievenhoutbosch. The new line will begin at the end of the planned Gauteng Rapid Rail Integrated Network (GRRIN) Phase 1 route, approximately 1.6km south of the proposed Little Falls Station, near Hendrik Potgieter Road.
The entire 19.9km section between Little Falls and Jabulani will run through underground tunnels beneath Roodepoort and into Soweto, although the station buildings will be constructed above ground. Jabulani Station is also planned to be above ground, with a design similar to that proposed for Roodepoort Station. Overall, the Gauteng government plans to develop approximately 72km of new rail infrastructure between Cosmo City and Jabulani, significantly extending the reach of the Gautrain network.
