The project aims to treat all of Puerto Maldonado’s wastewater, helping to reduce pollution in the Tambopata and Madre de Dios rivers. Developed in coordination with Peru’s Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation under a co-financed public-private partnership (PPP), the initiative involves an estimated investment of US$122.18 million and is expected to benefit approximately 197,000 residents. As the first wastewater treatment plant in the Peruvian Amazon, it is expected to improve sanitation services, lower the risk of waterborne diseases and safeguard the region’s water resources.
The project involves upgrading and expanding the sewerage network, installing or rehabilitating up to 25,000 household connections, and constructing a wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 400 litres per second. These improvements are expected to help reduce pollution in the Tambopata and Madre de Dios rivers. Under the 24-year concession agreement, the private concessionaire will oversee the project’s design, financing, construction, operation and maintenance, ensuring the long-term delivery of wastewater treatment services.
