A preliminary market engagement has initiated by the Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GWH) for the development of a new private healthcare facility in Swindon, UK.

This initiative aims to significantly expand GWH's private healthcare services and is currently in the exploratory phase to assess market interest and gather feedback from potential partners.

Key Highlights:

  • Objective: GWH seeks to identify potential partners to co-develop a new private healthcare facility, leveraging a 5.5-hectare parcel of expansion land adjacent to the existing hospital.

  • Current Services: GWH has a history of offering private healthcare through its dedicated Private Patient facility, The Shalbourne Unit. Post-COVID, private healthcare services have been distributed across various departments within the Trust. The private patient service is currently provided within the Surgery & Planned Care Division. Most private outpatient activity occurs outside NHS core hours, with 85% of admitted private patient care undertaken as day case activity. Approximately 50 consultants have utilized the in-house service over the past year, with a forecasted turnover of £3 million for 2024-25, marking an 11% increase from the previous year.

  • Market Demand: There is considerable unmet demand for private healthcare in and around Swindon, coupled with anticipated significant local population growth. Over 100 clinicians within the Trust are currently engaged in private practice, expressing interest in a new development that would allow for more private practice opportunities on the GWH site.

  • Proposed Development: An initial review suggests that a 4,000–6,000 m² facility, spanning 2 or 3 storeys, may be appropriate. However, GWH is open to feedback regarding the scale and structure of the development. The Trust has appointed Prime PLC as a commercial development partner to facilitate the delivery of new facilities tailored to the operator's requirements.

  • Engagement Process: Interested parties are invited to complete a supplier questionnaire via the Atamis portal by 4:00 PM on Friday, 6th June 2025. Subsequent one-on-one site visits and Q&A sessions are anticipated during the week commencing 16th June 2025. It's important to note that this is a market engagement exercise and not a commitment to proceed to a procurement event.
