Gateshead Council has approved a significant regeneration project for the town's Grade II-listed Old Town Hall, partnering with developer Capital & Centric to transform the historic site into a vibrant mixed-use neighborhood.
This initiative aims to revitalize the only surviving purpose-built Victorian town hall in Tyne and Wear, which was the council's headquarters until 1987. The redevelopment plan encompasses the Old Town Hall and its surrounding surface car parks, proposing the creation of characterful homes, along with cafés, bars, restaurants, and green spaces. The project's gross development value is estimated at GBP 60 million (US$ 81 million). Capital & Centric, known for repurposing historic buildings across the UK, will now proceed to develop detailed proposals and initiate a public consultation later this year to gather community feedback. This project marks Capital & Centric's first venture into the North East, aligning with their ongoing efforts to invest in regeneration projects across the UK.
