The Private Investment Promotion Agency (PROINVERSIÓN), in coordination with the Ministry of Housing and the Provincial Municipality of Tambopata, is strengthening the outreach efforts for the Puerto Maldonado Wastewater Treatment Plant (PTAR) project, which is scheduled to be awarded in December 2025 under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
This initiative will benefit more than 190,000 residents and will allow for the proper treatment of wastewater and the decontamination of the Tambopata and Madre de Dios rivers. Teams from PROINVERSIÓN, the Ministry of Housing, Construction, and Sanitation (MVCS), the utility EMAPAT, and the National Service of Natural Protected Areas (SERNANP) outlined innovative options for the safe and productive use of treated sewage sludge, drawing on successful practices from the region and from wastewater plants in Lima, Ayacucho, and other locations. Through these efforts, PROINVERSIÓN — an agency under the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) — reinforces its commitment to a participatory approach and to advancing sanitation infrastructure that enhances the quality of life of families in Madre de Dios.
