PROINVERSIÓN (Peruvian Private Investment Promotion Agency) is promoting/advancing the development of the Port of Corío (as a major logistics hub / "Megapuerto de las Américas") in southern Peru, to create a direct strategic interconnection between Peru (and broader South America) and Asia.
During the event “Corredor Sur del Perú: Megapuerto de las Américas Corío,” the agency described Corío not only as a seaport but also as a future “logistics city.” The plan includes storage facilities, cargo consolidation centers, distribution systems, and connections to highways and future rail infrastructure. The goal is to reduce transportation costs, improve efficiency, and increase Peru’s competitiveness in global trade. This corridor combines maritime ports, roads, and intermodal transport systems to support exports and regional economic development. PROINVERSIÓN noted that exports from southern Peru increased significantly over the past two decades, rising from 25% of national exports in 2002 to 44% in 2025, exceeding US$40 billion. These exports are mainly minerals, agricultural products, and industrial goods.
The project is also linked to Peru’s broader ambition to become a leading Pacific logistics platform alongside ports such as the Port of Chancay and the Port of Callao. Public discussions online and in regional media often compare Corío with Chancay, another major port project aimed at increasing direct trade with Asia. Supporters see Corío as an opportunity to expand exports, create jobs, and improve South America’s trade connectivity, while critics and commentators sometimes raise concerns about environmental impacts, dependence on commodity exports, and the influence of foreign investment in strategic infrastructure.
