PROINVERSIÓN announced that the Peruvian government will declare the new international port terminal project in Chimbote to be of national interest in May 2026, paving the way for its development under a PPP model with an estimated investment of US$300 million.
The project entails an investment of approximately USD 300 million and includes the comprehensive modernization of the existing pier, the construction of a specialized container pier, modern gantry cranes, and new storage yards. This infrastructure will allow the terminal to increase its annual cargo volume from 60,000 tons to 550,000 tons and generate up to 450,000 TEUs of containerized cargo in an optimal scenario. This is significant because, on average, only 500 TEUs have been handled annually over the last 10 years. This will multiply its operational capacity and strengthen the country's trade connection with the Asia-Pacific market. Located in Ferrol Bay, in the province of Santa (Áncash), the New Port Terminal of Chimbote is projected as a multipurpose port that will boost fishing, agro-industrial, and mining activities, as well as strengthen the northern port axis and its connection to logistics corridors leading to the Peruvian Amazon.
Over the past 20 years, Peru has transformed its port infrastructure through investments of more than US$5 billion, enabling the development of financially self-sustaining facilities without placing pressure on public finances. The country now operates nine concessioned port terminals, strengthening its role as a major maritime and trade hub in the region. To meet rising cargo demand and improve connectivity, Peru is continuing to expand and upgrade its national port network. As part of this effort, PROINVERSIÓN has identified a 2026 investment pipeline exceeding US$400 million aimed at modernizing key ports in Loreto (Sinchicuy and Saramiriza), Pucallpa, and Tacna, to build a more efficient and competitive logistics system nationwide.
