The Government of Ontario has invited four consortia to submit proposals for the Hamilton LRT project.
The four consortia are:
The selected consortia are now tasked with developing comprehensive proposals for a range of civil engineering works. These include utility relocations, road realignments, the construction of structures and bridges, grade separations, as well as pedestrian-friendly elements such as sidewalks and traffic control systems. All works are planned along the proposed 14-km light rail corridor, which stretches from McMaster University in the west to Eastgate Square in the east. Metrolinx, serving as both the project owner and delivery agency, has divided the project into two primary implementation phases.
In May 2021, the Province of Ontario and the Government of Canada jointly committed up to CAD 3.4 billion (USD 2.5 billion) to support the Hamilton LRT project, with each government pledging up to CAD 1.7 billion (USD 1.2 billion). Once operational, the LRT is expected to accommodate around 50,000 passengers daily and will seamlessly connect with the Hamilton Street Railway bus system and GO Transit regional rail services. The route will feature 17 well-placed stops, offering easy access to prominent locations such as McMaster University, City Hall, Hamilton Stadium, downtown, Eastgate Square, and various employment and cultural centers throughout the city.
