The Environment Agency (EA) has indicated it is "minded to accept" the proposal for the Tees Valley Energy Recovery Facility (TVERF), a waste incinerator planned for Grangetown, Redcar.
This facility aims to process up to 450,000 tonnes of waste annually from seven local councils in north-east England, including Newcastle, Durham, Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Stockton, and Redcar and Cleveland, converting it into energy. The EA has initiated a second public consultation, stating it found no reason to refuse the application but has not yet made a final decision.
Opponents, such as the group Stop Incineration North East, argue that the incinerator is "unfair and dangerous," advocating for recycling over burning waste. They plan to submit further objections during this consultation period. Conversely, project partners assert that energy-from-waste incinerators are reliable, safe, and have undergone extensive regulatory and academic scrutiny over decades. They consider the project the most sustainable solution for managing the region's residual waste. Newcastle City Council's director of operations and regulatory services has previously stated there is no "affordable alternative" to the incinerator plans. The EA will make its final decision after reviewing feedback from the ongoing consultation.
