The Chilean Ministry of Public Works (MOP), in partnership with VíasChile and OHLA, has advanced construction of the US$450 million Túnel Lo Ruiz project to 20% in Santiago, Chile, to improve connectivity and reduce congestion at the Nudo Quilicura.
The project involves constructing two approximately 1.47-km-long unidirectional tunnels beneath Cerro Lo Ruiz, providing direct connections to the General Velásquez and Vespucio Norte highways. Together, the tunnels will extend for around 3 km and will be equipped with advanced safety and technological systems, with a design speed of 80 km/h. Construction has progressed with approximately 550 metres of tunnel already excavated.
The concession encompasses approximately 5.8 km of infrastructure, including the tunnels, associated structures, and connecting roads. Once operational, the project is expected to reduce congestion at the Quilicura Junction by around 25% and cut travel times by up to 20 minutes. It will also enhance the surrounding area through the addition of more than 10,000 hectares of green spaces, three community parks, and a 3-km cycling path. The parks will feature sports facilities, picnic areas, playgrounds, and landscaped areas.
