The Union government has allocated ₹7.24 crore (US$0.8 million) under the Sagarmala Programme to support the development of a multi-purpose berth and wharf at Kollam Port in Kerala. The overall project is estimated to cost ₹15.15 crore (US$1.6 million). The proposed facility will include a 101m-long and 21m-wide wharf, along with ancillary infrastructure. The project is intended to strengthen Kollam Port’s role in logistics, cargo handling, warehousing, tourism and other maritime activities. The development comes as Kerala seeks to expand smaller ports alongside Vizhinjam International Seaport, particularly as Vizhinjam handles increasing volumes of export-import cargo.

The Kerala government has given in-principle approval for developing Kollam Port under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. It is preparing a detailed project report to determine the most appropriate development model based on the port’s requirements and potential. The planned investment is expected to improve cargo movement and connectivity between ports, while encouraging investment in port operations, logistics, warehousing, tourism and related maritime businesses. The project could consequently create new employment opportunities and strengthen Kerala’s wider maritime infrastructure network.
