The Prayagraj Municipal Corporation (PMC) has begun expanding the Bio-CNG plant at Jahangirabad in Naini, Prayagraj, increasing its production capacity from 40 tonnes to 60 tonnes per day to strengthen the city's waste-to-energy infrastructure.

The Bio-CNG plant at Jahangirabad in Naini, which converts Prayagraj's wet municipal waste into renewable fuel, is being expanded to increase its production capacity from 40 tonnes to 60 tonnes per day. Work on the capacity enhancement is already underway and is expected to generate additional revenue for the PMC while reinforcing the city's waste-to-energy programme and supporting broader environmental sustainability and waste-to-wealth initiatives. The Bio-CNG plant, located on approximately 13 acres near Arail Ghat, was established under the Prayagraj Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) project to convert wet waste collected from households, hotels, restaurants and temples into renewable fuel. The facility currently processes around 200 metric tonnes of organic waste each day, producing 40 tonnes of Bio-CNG. Following the planned expansion, its processing capacity will increase to approximately 300 metric tonnes of wet waste per day, enabling daily Bio-CNG production to reach 60 tonnes.

The Bio-CNG plant has been operational for approximately two years and is managed under a PPP model. The PMC currently generates annual revenue of around ₹40–50 lakh from the sale of Bio-CNG, with earnings projected to increase to ₹60–70 lakh following the planned capacity expansion. The Bio-CNG produced at the facility is sold directly to the operating company. Prayagraj generates approximately 650 metric tonnes of municipal waste each day from households, hotels, restaurants, and temples, including around 200 metric tonnes of biodegradable waste, such as vegetable and fruit scraps, flowers, and leftover food. The expansion will enable the plant to process a greater proportion of this organic waste, diverting it from disposal and converting it into renewable fuel.
