PROINVERSIÓN has officially assumed ownership of the Puerto Maldonado Wastewater Treatment Plant (PTAR) project, strengthening its role in managing and executing infrastructure projects in Peru.
The project, awarded by the Agency in December 2025, involves an investment exceeding US$120 million and is designed to treat all of the city’s wastewater, benefiting more than 190,000 people. It will also support the restoration of the Tambopata and Madre de Dios rivers and help lower the prevalence of diseases associated with inadequate sanitation. The initiative is particularly significant because it will improve environmental conditions in the Madre de Dios region by helping to restore the Tambopata and Madre de Dios rivers and reduce diseases linked to poor sanitation. It also represents a major milestone, as it will be the first wastewater treatment plant developed in the Peruvian Amazon.
In addition to the treatment plant itself, the project includes expanding and upgrading sewer networks, installing new household connections, building pumping stations, and removing outdated infrastructure. It also provides technical support to the local water utility to ensure efficient and sustainable operation of the system. Overall, the project highlights the government’s effort to close sanitation gaps, improve public health, and promote sustainable infrastructure development through public-private partnerships.
