Webuild-led PerGenova Breakwater Consortium has extended the New Genoa Breakwater to approximately 1.5 km with the installation of a new mega caisson on behalf of the Port Authority of the Western Ligurian Sea in Genoa, Italy.

The New Genoa Breakwater is being constructed by the PerGenova Breakwater Consortium, led by Webuild, for the Port Authority of the Western Ligurian Sea. The installation of a new mega caisson has brought the breakwater’s total length to around 1.5 km, representing another major milestone in one of Europe’s most technically challenging maritime engineering projects. At the same time, seabed consolidation works are continuing to strengthen and stabilise the foundations of the structure. Construction of the superstructure, the most visible section of the breakwater, is also advancing. This component is designed to absorb and reduce the impact of waves, helping protect the port infrastructure.

Cossi Costruzioni, a subsidiary focused on complex project delivery, is also contributing to the construction works. Its involvement highlights Webuild’s integrated industrial approach, which combines the expertise, production capabilities, operational synergies and workforce of its subsidiaries to address demanding engineering challenges and accelerate the development of strategically important infrastructure projects.

The breakwater is being constructed on a seabed reaching depths of up to 50 metres, adding significant complexity to each installation phase. The works require the coordinated use of specialised marine equipment, advanced technologies and highly skilled teams responsible for monitoring, control and support operations across land, sea and underwater environments.

The New Genoa Breakwater is a strategically important project aimed at strengthening the Port of Genoa and improving its links with domestic and European markets. It will support more efficient logistics flows to Northern Italy and key European transport corridors. Once completed, the project will enable the port to accommodate next-generation vessels, enhancing its capacity, efficiency and competitiveness while reinforcing the wider port system.
